Veneer Matching and Marquetry: Book, Slip and Sunburst
Veneer is the first thing an FF&E reviewer notices and the last thing a quotation explains. Sixty wardrobe doors in a corridor are read as one surface before anybody opens them, and whether that surface looks deliberate or accidental depends on a decision made months earlier, when leaves of veneer were taken from a flitch, sorted for colour, and laid out on a cutting table. Matching costs labour and yield rather than material, which is precisely why it is easy to leave out of a price and easy to notice when it has been.
Marquetry pushes the same craft further. Once you can control how leaves are arranged, you can cut shapes, inlay borders and build a picture in wood - but every step also increases the risk that a panel arrives at the sanding hall with an exposed substrate or a shadow line. For a specifier writing a case goods package, a distributor setting a range standard, or a project owner comparing two factories that both promise "premium veneer", it helps to know exactly what is being promised and what it costs.
What a veneer match actually is
Veneer is a thin slice of timber, commonly around half a millimetre thick, cut from a log either by flat slicing or by rotary peeling. A flitch is the bundle of leaves sliced in sequence from one section of that log, and the leaves are numbered so they can be kept in order. Two properties follow from this and drive everything else in the craft.
The first is that leaves within one flitch are related: they share grain figure and, roughly, colour, because they came from adjacent positions in the same log. Leaves from different flitches, or from different logs, will not match no matter how carefully they are laid out - and that is where colour sorting at the veneer store earns its keep. The second is that veneer is a facing, not a structure. It is bonded to a substrate that provides the strength and the stability, which is why a balanced construction, with a backing veneer or a counterface on the reverse, matters as much as the visible face. A panel faced on one side only will move.
Matching is the arrangement of those leaves on the visible surface. There are four arrangements worth knowing, and they are usually specified together on a project rather than chosen individually.
Book match: the mirror and its limits
A book match takes two consecutive leaves, opens them like the pages of a book, and joins them along a centre line. The result is a mirror image, which concentrates the figure and creates a strong vertical or horizontal axis. On a highly figured species the effect is dramatic and reads as deliberate even from across a room.
Two limits are worth writing down. First, the joint at the mirror line is visible, because each half reflects light at a different angle; on an open-grained or glossy species the line becomes part of the design, and on a subtle grain it can look like a manufacturing defect to eyes that were not expecting it. Second, book matching works best on a panel that is seen flat and straight on. Applied across a long run of separate doors, the mirror line repeats and the composition starts to feel like a pattern rather than a panel.
The arrangement also exposes any mismatch in the pairs: if two leaves differ slightly in colour, the mirror doubles the difference and it becomes the most visible thing in the room. Colour sorting before cutting is therefore the whole job on a book-matched run.
Slip match: the repeat that reads as a run
A slip match, sometimes called a running match, lays consecutive leaves side by side in the same direction. There is no mirror, so the joint between the leaves is far less noticeable, and the figure repeats across the surface in a sequence that reads as a continuous run rather than as a set of pairs.
This is the arrangement that suits a large project. Across a bank of wardrobe doors or a wall of drawer fronts, a slip-matched sequence taken from the same flitch reads as one surface that continues from unit to unit, which is exactly what a corridor elevation is asking for. The trade-off is that the effect is quieter: a slip match will not deliver the dramatic axis of a book match, and on a strongly figured species the repetition can become obvious when several panels are seen together.
Specifying sequence across units is the part buyers most often forget. A slip match within a panel is easy to deliver; a slip match that continues from door one to door twenty requires the flitch to be reserved for the whole run and the leaves to be allocated in advance. That is a production planning decision, taken before the first panel is cut, not a favour that can be arranged at packing time.

A sunburst is the arrangement most often requested and least often quoted honestly. Leaves must be cut to a taper and arranged so the figure runs out from the centre, which means a substantial part of each leaf is waste, and the grain direction changes with every segment, so the panel cannot be sanded across in one direction. The result is beautiful and expensive, and it belongs on a few statement surfaces rather than across a programme.
Diamond arrangements have their own discipline: four groups of leaves are mitred into quadrants, and the mitres have to meet on the diagonal lines without a visible step. Grain direction must be planned so that the figure reads continuously around the diamond. When it works, it looks effortless; when it does not, one quadrant is always slightly darker, and no amount of finishing hides it.
Marquetry, inlay and borders
Marquetry is where veneer stops being a surface treatment and becomes an assembly. Individual pieces are cut - by hand, by knife against a template, or by a cutting machine - and fitted together to form a picture, a geometric field or a decorative border. Inlay and banding sit alongside it: a line of contrasting species, a brass or mother-of-pearl detail, a crossbanded border around a field of matched veneer.
Three practical controls decide whether marquetry survives a contract life. Substrate stability comes first, because a picture built from dozens of small pieces with different grain directions is only as stable as the board beneath it; a good substrate and a balanced construction matter more here than anywhere else. Adhesive and film control come second, since too much glue under thin pieces bleeds into the joint lines and too little leaves an open seam that moves with the seasons. Finishing comes third: sanding across the grain direction changes how each piece reads under light, and a finish that builds too fast can lift an inlay at the edge.
For contract work, marquetry belongs where a hand will not rest on it every day and a housekeeping team will not learn to avoid it: a reception desk front, a feature wall panel, a decorative border on a signature piece.
What the drawing must show, and what matching costs in yield
A match requirement is only enforceable if it appears on the drawing.
- The arrangement by name, per element: book, slip, sunburst, diamond, or random.
- The direction of the sequence, and whether it continues across adjacent units.
- The centre line or centre point, dimensioned, for any mirrored or radial arrangement.
- The veneer species, cut method and the acceptable colour range, ideally with a physical sample.
- The substrate and the balance of the construction, including any counterface.
- The joint treatment: taped, stitched, or with a contrasting inlay line to make the joint deliberate.
- The finish reference, since sheen level decides how visible the joints will be.
Cost sits in the yield: a matched face needs leaves reserved for a specific position, and a radial arrangement uses a fraction of each leaf. What matters commercially is that the two prices are presented as what they are - a design decision with a manufacturing consequence, not a specification a supplier can be argued into at the original price.
How a matched face is protected through the halls
Once a face is laid up, the risk shifts from aesthetics to damage. In our Foshan workshop, matched faces are allocated a reference at the cutting stage and that reference travels with the panel: through edge banding or lipping, through the sanding hall where a machine pass in the wrong direction would cost the whole face, and through the finishing hall where a sealer has to be applied evenly so the alternating grain does not read as stripes. Panels are stored covered and are handled from the edges, because a fingernail mark in half-millimetre veneer is a permanent mark.
We also expect a matched specification to be closed out on a physical sample rather than on a rendering. On bespoke work, the mock-up room is where the client sees how the leaves were actually laid up, including the colour range that was accepted, and that approval becomes the reference for the run. It is a small step that prevents the most expensive argument in veneered work: whether a finished run matches an intention that was never fixed on paper.

A supplier who quotes a matched face at the same price as a random face is either absorbing it or planning not to do it.
Can a matched veneer face be repaired if it is damaged?
Cosmetically, usually not to the standard of the original, because the repair has to come from the same flitch to match the colour and figure, and the flitch may not be in stock years later.
