Solid Wood vs Veneer vs Melamine: Casegood Specs for Contract Furniture
Solid Wood, Veneer and Melamine for Contract Casegoods
The material decision on contract casegoods is not a single choice between wood and panel; it is a four-layer decision stacked on top of one another, and the layer that fails first is rarely the one the buyer spent the most on. At Rosy Rose, where we have run a Foshan casegoods line since 1983 with woodworking, soft-goods, metal and finishing in-house, we write every casegoods quote against the same four-layer model, because in our experience the cases that come back for warranty are the ones where only one layer was specified.
This guide sets out the four layers, compares them on the variables that decide replacement economics in a hotel or commercial project, names the compliance evidence the spec should call up, and provides the clause language that locks every layer before production starts.
The Spec Freeze: Why Four Layers, Not One
A casegoods specification freezes four layers per part. A clause that names only the face material — "veneer" or "melamine" — leaves three layers on the table:
| Layer | What it does | Failure mode if unspecified |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Carries the structural load | Sagging shelves, racking twist, hinge failure |
| Face | Carries the appearance | Visual replacement before structural end of life |
| Edge | Protects the substrate | Swelling at sink units, vanity tops, desk returns |
| Hardware | Carries the moving parts | Drawer slide failure, hinge wear, soft-close breakdown |
Across our 200,000㎡ base the four-layer model is built into the quotation template, and a project that arrives with only a face specification is sent back with the four-layer sheet before the quote is opened. This is one of the quieter sources of warranty savings in our factory.
Compliance Documents to Ask for Before Quotation
Three documents should travel with the quotation, not with the bulk shipment. The order matters because the document set is also the spec freeze.
| Document | What it states | Why it is asked for at quote stage |
|---|---|---|
| Panel class declaration | CARB P2 or TSCA Title VI compliance with test report reference | Locks the formaldehyde class before panel is cut |
| Finish system declaration | Coating type, sheen, build, repair method | Locks the appearance before spray shop schedules |
| Hardware schedule | Slide brand and model, hinge brand and model, soft-close rating | Locks the moving parts before assembly lines are booked |
A quote that arrives without these three documents is not a quote — it is a budget estimate, and a buyer who treats it as a quote will pay the difference at change-control time.
Core, Face, Edge and Hardware Compared
Core: plywood, MDF, particleboard
| Core | Strength | Weight | Moisture tolerance | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plywood, birch or poplar | High | Medium | Good with proper lamination | High |
| MDF | Medium | Heavy | Poor at cut edges | Medium |
| Particleboard | Lower | Heavy | Poor | Low |
For desks, vanities and any wet-adjacent surface, specify plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, never standard particleboard. In our experience, the bulk of casegoods warranty calls come from particleboard cores in vanity and minibar applications.
Face: solid wood, veneer, melamine, lacquer
| Face | Repair | Appearance life | Cost per m² |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid wood | Sand and refinish | Refinishable for the life of the piece | Highest |
| Veneer | Limited; spot repairs visible | 10–15 years to first refinish | Mid-high |
| High-pressure laminate | Replace the panel | 10–15 years, no refinish | Mid |
| Melamine | Replace the panel | 7–10 years, no refinish | Low |
| Lacquer on MDF | Polish and spot repair | 8–12 years to first respray | Mid |
A veneered face costs more at the factory but can be refinished in the field; a melamine face is cheaper at the factory and is a panel replacement when it fails. The ten-year cost comparison depends on how many times the spec writer expects the casegoods to be refinished in place. In our experience at Rosy Rose, hospitality casegoods are refinished once in the first ten years, which puts veneer and laminates in a similar cost bracket over the cycle.
Edge: the layer that fails first
Edge band thickness, edge band material and edge band adhesive together decide whether a vanity top survives a hotel bathroom. Specify 2 mm PVC or ABS as a minimum on horizontal surfaces, and specify the adhesive class to match the humidity of the area.
Hardware: the inexpensive parts that end an item's life
A drawer slide rated for 50,000 cycles and a hinge rated for 200,000 cycles are the kind of line that belongs in a hotel casegoods clause. The brand and model are named on the hardware schedule, and the supplier warranty travels with the bulk shipment. Across our 200,000㎡ base, the hardware schedule is the second-most-disputed change-control item after finish.
The RFQ Checklist That Produces a Quotable Price
A drawing-based quotation is what the factory can price. A photograph is not. The RFQ packet the factory needs:
- Dimensioned drawings of every part number. Front, plan and section at a minimum.
- A materials schedule. Core, face, edge and hardware per part number, with brand/model where relevant.
- A finish schedule. Coating route, sheen, colour reference, repair method.
- A compliance schedule. Panel class, finish VOC class, hardware grade, target market.
- A volumes and lead-time schedule. Quantities per part number, phased delivery if any, target arrival date.
The RFQ that arrives with all five sheets returns a quotation tied to drawings, and the quotation is the one the buyer's tender can be priced against. Our product programmes are organised the same way: drawings, materials, finish, compliance, volumes.
Lead Time and Production Slot
A casegoods order on the four-layer model runs:
| Phase | Duration | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing and quote | 10–15 working days | Spec freeze, panel cut list, hardware schedule |
| Sample build | 10–15 working days | One piece per part number or per product line, signed off |
| Bulk production | 35–50 working days | Cut, edge, finish, assembly, hardware fit |
| Pack and ship | 5–10 working days | Crate, container, document pack |
A production slot is held against the buyer's reservation, with a written deposit window. In our experience, the projects that hold their slot on the published calendar finish on the published calendar; the projects that float their deposit window float their opening.
Risk Register: What Fails in Year Five
Across hotel installations, the five casegoods failure modes that show up in year five are: particleboard core swelling at vanity tops, melamine face peeling on desk returns, drawer slide failure on wardrobes, hinge wear on minibar doors, and edge band shrinkage on床头板. Every one of them is closed by a four-layer specification written before production starts.
Our 16 inspection checkpoints on the casegoods line include the four-layer audit at goods-in, the core moisture check after cut, the edge band pull test, the hardware cycle test on a sample piece, and the colour read against master at pre-pack.
Drawings Settle the Casegoods Spec
Send the elevation drawings, the area traffic class, the finish you have in mind and the destination market to Rosy Rose, and we will return a drawing-based quotation with core, face, edge and hardware written against every part number. The same pack carries the compliance schedule and the lead-time clock against your reservation. See the casegoods programmes we build casegoods ranges around, and the company profile for the four workshops that make a single point of accountability possible.
Panel choice is a ten-year decision dressed up as a price line. Because our own finishing line handles solid, veneer and laminate surfaces, the recommendation you get is based on what we can repair in the field, not on what is cheapest to buy. The 100,000㎡ showroom carries all three surfaces in matched room sets for direct comparison.
Send the pack to WhatsApp +86 188 2788 2512 and we will come back with a quotation tied to drawings, a sample ladder sized to your traffic class, and a production slot held against your opening date.
FAQ
Is melamine acceptable in an upper-upscale hotel guestroom? Yes, if substrate density, edge detail and finish system are all specified. Melamine loses to veneer on repairability and visible edge lines, not on performance. For back-of-house and select-service guestrooms, a foil-faced panel with a 2 mm radiused edge and matched banding performs well for years. Where guests stand close and the edge is in view, veneer or a post-formed edge is the safer specification.
Which is cheaper over ten years, veneer or melamine? Compare more than panel price. A veneered face costs more at the factory but can be sanded and recoated in place, so a damaged panel is a service call rather than a replacement. A foil face is not repairable once the paper layer is cut through, so every dented drawer front becomes a panel swap plus freight. Have both vendors quote a 3 percent and a 6 percent annual replacement allowance and compare the totals.
Do veneered casegoods comply with CARB P2 and TSCA Title VI? Compliance attaches to the engineered core, not to the face. A veneered or foil-faced panel on a compliant MDF or plywood core is compliant; the same veneer over a non-compliant particleboard core is not. Ask for the formaldehyde emission test report for the specific core supplier and grade, and make that document a condition of the purchase order rather than a brochure claim.
