Lead Time and the Sample Ladder

- Pre-production piece. One production part in the production finish, signed off before the bulk run starts.

Substrate and Preparation: What the Coating Sits On
Every metal finish is a chain of five steps, and the weakest link sets the outcome:
- Substrate selection. Grade, temper and wall thickness. This determines corrosion resistance before any coating exists. On coastal projects the risk rises sharply with lower-alloy stainless grades.
- Preparation. Degreasing, pickling, grinding, brushing or polishing. The surface profile a coating sits on decides adhesion.
- Coating application. Vacuum deposition, electrostatic spray, dipping or plating.
- Cure or fixation. Oven schedule for powder, plating post-treatment, PVD cycle.
- Sealing and assembly. Topcoat, wax, packaging and the moment the part meets the other components it ships with.
A coating cannot rescue a substrate. Pitting is a substrate problem, not a coating problem. Corrosion starts at a defect, a cut edge, a scratch or a drilled hole where the coating is thinner or absent. Once moisture reaches the steel, the corrosion products lift the coating from behind, so the surface looks intact right up to the moment it flakes. PVD: thin, hard, and entirely dependent on the substrate
PVD is a vacuum deposition process in which a metal is vaporised and condensed onto the substrate as a thin, hard film. There is no plating bath in the coating step. Because the film is measured in microns, it sits on the substrate rather than burying it, which means the substrate finish underneath is visible through the coating. A mirror-polished substrate under PVD looks entirely different from a brushed substrate under the same PVD. PVD is not a plating process, and the distinction matters commercially for any buyer writing a contract clause.
Powder coat: the workhorse, and the one most often under-specified
Powder coat is the most common finish in contract seating frames. The specification usually names a colour and a gloss range, and stops there. Two numbers travel with every powder coat clause and decide warranty performance: the substrate preparation class and the film thickness. A 60 µm film on a properly prepared substrate behaves nothing like a 60 µm film on a poorly prepared one.
Electroplating: classic appearance, new chemistry constraints
Electroplating produces the gold, chrome and nickel finishes that the contract furniture market still asks for. Compliance constraints on hexavalent chromium, on certain brightening agents and on rinse effluent have changed the chemistry, but the appearance is still the appearance the buyer wants. Specify the plating thickness, the substrate finish under the plating and the post-plating lacquer.
Quality Gates: Salt Spray, Adhesion and Colour
The three tests that decide whether a metal finish is going to survive a hotel contract:
- Salt spray (ASTM B117). Hours to first corrosion creep. A coastal contract should ask for 1000 hours on stainless, 500 hours on powder-over-zinc-rich primer.
- Adhesion (cross-hatch, ASTM D3359). A pass means the coating cannot be lifted by a standard tape pull.
- Colour tolerance. ΔE against an approved physical master, on a spectrophotometer, with the illuminant and geometry stated.
