Four questions decide the list: where is the project, what does the operator require, what is the piece made of, and how hard will it be used?

A common mistake is to write all of them into every specification without checking that the products can satisfy them. Decide the required set early, then price against it.
What does EN 13501 actually classify?
EN 13501 is the European classification system for reaction-to-fire performance. It assigns classes — commonly described as A1 through F, with additional ratings for smoke production and for flaming droplets — based on the results of standard fire tests.
Three things are worth being precise about.
- It classifies materials and components. A foam, a fabric, a panel or a timber species receives a classification; a finished sofa does not receive one as a whole.
- It is a classification, not a test. The underlying tests are conducted under the EN 13501 series, and the classification is derived from those results.
- Class improvements usually come from chemistry and density. Fire-retardant treatment, denser foam and barrier interliners are the levers, and each has a cost and sometimes a comfort consequence.
For a hotel project, the practical translation is this: ask which components carry which classification, and then confirm that those exact components are the ones entered on the purchase order.
What does BS 5852 test, and why do UK projects specify it?
BS 5852 assesses the ignitability of upholstered furniture by exposing it to defined ignition sources, from smouldering sources that mimic a smouldering cigarette through to flaming sources of increasing severity. Composite assemblies — fabric over foam over interliner — are tested as a combination, because that is how they behave in a seat.
The consequence for buyers is that fabric, foam and interliner must be approved together. A fabric that performs well over one foam may behave differently over another, so a report should name the combination, not just the fabric reference. Where a project requires a specific ignition source schedule, that requirement belongs in the specification and in the purchase order, written in full.
What does BIFMA X5.1 cover?
BIFMA X5.1 is the North American durability and safety test standard for general-purpose office chairs. It sets out mechanical tests including cyclic loading of the seat and back, impact, and stability under defined conditions, with pass criteria stated for each test.
It is often specified for hotel task seating, meeting-room chairs and back-of-house furniture because it provides a recognised durability benchmark rather than a subjective opinion. Two practical points follow.
- It tests a design, so a change to a mechanism, a gas lift, a castor or a frame section may invalidate the previous result.
- It is durability-focused rather than fire-focused, so it complements rather than replaces reaction-to-fire requirements.
For heavier or non-task seating, buyers should check whether the operator's manual references a different BIFMA volume or an alternative durability standard, and specify accordingly.
What formaldehyde rules apply to composite wood?
Composite wood panels — MDF, plywood, particleboard — use adhesives that can emit formaldehyde, which is why several markets regulate them.
- TSCA Title VI is the United States regulation setting formaldehyde emission limits for composite wood products placed on the US market, with documentation duties along the supply chain.
- CARB P2 refers to the California Air Resources Board Phase 2 limits, which are widely used as a purchasing benchmark well beyond California.
The evidence a supplier can realistically provide is a supplier declaration or a panel test report from the panel producer. That is a declaration of panel compliance, not a certificate for the finished piece. When a project demands specific documentary wording, agree the wording before production, because rewriting a declaration after loading is not possible.
What is FSC chain of custody, and when does it matter?
FSC certification covers forest management and chain of custody. When a project claims certified timber, the chain-of-custody documents must trace the material from forest through each organisation that handled it to the finished product.
Two rules keep the claim defensible.
- Every organisation in the chain must appear in the documentation. If one link is uncertified, the claim breaks at that point.
- The claim must match the material actually used. A certified timber specified for frames is not supported by a certificate for a different species or a different part.
Where a project does not require a certified claim, the point is simply not to make a claim the paperwork does not support.
How do you read a fire test report?
Read four fields before any others.

- Name the component the requirement applies to — foam, fabric, interliner, panel, frame.
- State the evidence required and who issues it.
- State that any substitution requires re-approval with fresh evidence.
That last line is the one that protects a project. Most compliance failures are not failures of testing; they are failures of substitution — a foam grade changed during production, a panel supplier switched for availability, a fabric replaced after a discontinued line. If re-approval is written into the contract, substitution stops being invisible.
