Packaging is where the last three months of careful manufacturing is either protected or wasted. A frame that passed every in-line gate and every inspection still arrives as a claim if the carton would not take a second stack, if the lacquer sat against unfoamed cardboard for five weeks, or if a container that loaded at 96 percent humidity sweated onto unprotected timber in the North Atlantic.
The buyers who understand this earliest are the ones who treat packaging as an engineering specification rather than a line item. This guide sets out what changes between a full container load and a less-than-container load, what belongs in a carton specification, and how to write packaging into a purchase order so the risk travels with the goods rather than with the invoice. The loading mode decides the protection
FCL and LCL do not fail in the same way, so they should not be packed the same way. The most common packaging mistake in Chinese furniture export is applying an FCL packing standard to an LCL consignment and assuming the freight forwarder will treat it gently.

The practical conclusion: FCL rewards cube optimisation and load stability, while LCL rewards self-supporting units, generous internal protection and markings that survive separation from their neighbour.
The carton, and what goes inside it
Carton quality is not measured by how it feels. It is measured by board grade and construction, and the two numbers that carry the conversation are the edge-crush test value and the board caliper.
- Three-ply board suits light components — cushions, hardware packs, small accessories
- Five-ply board is the working standard for KD furniture bodies, table tops and anything with weight or a long unsupported span
- Double-wall or heavy-grade board belongs on marble and stone tops, glass, metal bases and any component over roughly 20 kg
- Carton sizing should follow the packed component closely, because voids inside a carton allow movement, and movement is what produces corner crush and finish rub
- A stated edge-crush value in the specification converts the grade into something an inspector can verify against a board sample
Cartons should be sized to the unit of load, not to a pallet standard alone. A carton specified for a 1,200 by 800 pallet footprint that actually ships on 1,100 by 1,100 pallets wastes cube and defeats its own stacking plan.
Internal protection: the layer buyers under-specify
The gap between a competent and an incompetent furniture shipment is usually internal protection. It is cheap relative to the goods, and it is where most cost-cutting happens, because it is invisible unless you open the carton.
- Foam protection on every exposed edge and corner, with thicker sections on lacquered, veneered and high-gloss surfaces than on matte film-faced panels
- Corner protectors on all four top and bottom corners of heavy units, since corner drop damage is the single most common transit claim
- Surface separation between stacked panels and between glass or marble tops, using foam sheet rather than paper
- Moisture control with PE bagging on susceptible finishes plus desiccant, which matters on long sea legs and in any container that will cross a cold front
- Hardware containment with screws, cam locks and fittings bagged and physically fixed inside the carton, so a bag cannot migrate or disappear
- Legs and detached components packed in their own protected nests, with the assembly positions identified
A specification worth writing names the foam thickness at corners and edges in millimetres, states that glass and stone are crated separately, and requires hardware to be fixed rather than simply placed.
Pallets, ISPM 15 and container humidity
Palletisation changes by mode and by product. Upholstery and casegoods normally travel flat-packed and stacked directly, which uses cube best. Glass, stone, mirrors, metal bases and heavy tops belong on pallets or in crates, and LCL consignments of value benefit from crating even where it costs cube, because the alternative is a consolidator's forklift deciding the outcome.
Wood packaging is regulated. Solid-wood pallets, crates, dunnage and bracing must meet ISPM 15, which for most cases means heat treatment to a marked core temperature, with the stamp applied to the wood itself. Processed boards such as plywood and oriented strand board generally fall outside that requirement. Two consequences follow for buyers: specify the treatment and the marking requirement in the purchase order, and expect destination authorities to check the stamp rather than the paperwork. Crating also needs a decision on openness — a fully enclosed crate protects better but hides the contents from inspection, and a crate with inspection access is the usual compromise for high-value LCL consignments.
Condensation and container rain
Container rain is the failure mode that surprises importers in their first year. A container loaded in hot, humid conditions carries warm moist air; as it crosses colder water the internal surfaces chill, moisture condenses, and it drips onto whatever sits directly beneath the roof. The damage looks like water stains on the top cartons and finish damage underneath. Practical controls, all of which belong in a written standard:
- Avoid loading timber and foam that were stored in an open yard the same day
- Use desiccant at a rate matched to the shipment volume, placed at the container door, along the walls and on top of the load, not only under it
- Wrap moisture-sensitive finishes in PE film before cartoning
- Record loading conditions, so a claim can distinguish condensation damage from water ingress
Shipping marks, and specifying packaging in the purchase order
Marks do two jobs: they let a warehouse find your cargo, and they let you identify a specific unit when a claim is opened. At minimum, every carton should carry a main mark identifying the consignee and the destination port, a purchase order or shipment reference, carton numbering in the form 12 of 120, the side and handling marks, and the SKU or product code. On LCL consignments, where cartons are separated from their neighbours, the main mark has to be complete on every unit rather than only on the outside of a pallet.
A carton numbering scheme also closes the QC loop. If the pre-shipment inspection records which carton numbers were sampled, and the same numbers can be found in your warehouse, a later problem can be traced to a production batch instead of argued in generalities. Five clauses carry the weight in the purchase order:
- Board grade and minimum edge-crush value stated for each product category
- Internal protection specified by component: foam thickness, corner protection, surface separation, bagging and desiccant
- Glass, stone and metal components crated or palletised per an agreed drawing
- ISPM 15 treatment and marking required on all solid-wood packaging
- Shipping marks and carton numbering to the agreed format, with a loading diagram supplied before the container is sealed
From Specification to Packed Carton
Packaging is the last mile of the quality programme, and it fails in the same way the earlier gates do — through ambiguity, not malice. It works best beside a written product specification and an inspection regime, because the inspector is the person who confirms the packing method you specified is the one that shipped.
